Until recently, the sky was their preferred playground; now, for aerial artists Saar Rombout and Sianna Bruce, the soft crash mat beckons. Pain is intertwined with circus. But since they are both injured, this 'sensation' took on a whole new connotation. In this first episode of Circus Whispers, our host Maaike Muis is suspended in the air. There she discovers not only how much muscular strength this requires but hears all about a circus performer's greatest fear.

Circus research, how do you do it? In this second episode of Circus Whispers, we hear how acrobat duo Lily&Janick kept falling out of their handstand. The mirrored floor they work on had everything to do with it. What does your brain do to you when you suddenly stand upright in a mirrored handstand? And how do you deal with the constant self-confrontation. In this episode, host Maaike Muis stands behind the glass like an Alice in Wonderland and TENT director Rosa Boon talks more about the circus marriage between body and object.

Most of the time, chaos reigns in her head. Susanna tries to make coffee and spin around in the Cyr-wheel at the same time. Keeping your focus is already a challenge for many people, even more so for those with attention deficit disorder. In this third episode of Circus Whispers, we hear how circusartist Susanna Paavola translates this chaos to the stage. Armed with two cyr-wheels and anything else that might distract her, she enters a residency week at TENT. And host Maaike Muis will also be spinning, sincerely hoping to keep all her toenails.

Meestal heerst er chaos in haar hoofd. Susanna probeert koffie te zetten terwijl ze ook aan het spinnen is in haar cyr-wheel. Je focus houden is al een uitdaging voor veel mensen, zelfs nog meer voor mensen met een aandachtstekortstoornis. 

In deze derde aflevering van Circus Whispers horen we hoe circus artieste Susanna Paavoladeze chaos vertaalt naar het podium. His desire was to create an acrobatic performance with a non-acrobatic partner. But when you replace the partner with an object, you enter the realm of object manipulation. In the studio, Maaike Muis meets Trebor, the new 'living' partner of Maker for a Week Samuel Rhyner. In this fourth episode of Circus Whispers, we hear all about the post-apocalyptic performance in the making, his attempts to reduce his climate footprint and all the pros and cons of working with a young tree as a dance partner.

Het was zijn wens om een acrobatische voorstelling te maken met een niet-acrobatische partner. Maar als je de partner vervangt door een object, begeef je je op het terrein van objectmanipulatie. For Fenja Barteldres too, the perfection and simplicity of the round Cyr Wheel was irresistible. But when she broke the wheel into pieces, the round shape turned out to be just one of 47 possibilities. Daarmee eindigt de podcast LINC In Suriname. Een audioreis en auditief-verslag van de reis die ik samen met 38 anderen maakte naar Suriname in het najaar van 2022.

Deze groep professionals uit diverse disciplines van de Nederlandse kunst- en cultuursector, verenigd als Club LinC, hebben toen een deel van Suriname bezocht. De gemêleerde groep LinC’ers heeft zich ondergedompeld in de veelzijdige Surinaamse cultuur en verbindingen gelegd met culturele organisaties en drijvende krachten. We hebben verschillende hoogtepunten bezocht en gesprekken gevoerd over de Surinaamse culturele sector en andere perspectieven.

“Hoe werkt een internationale samenwerking in de praktijk en hoe geef je deze als Nederlands productiehuis optimaal vorm? Gelden er andere regels als het gaat om publieksbenadering en marketing? Wat kunnen wij- en het Nederlandse circusveld- leren van de werkpraktijk van Jacksons Lane en producent Split Second in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en met name van de manier waarop zij hun ‘huis' toegankelijk laten zijn voor iedereen?”. 🙌🤸‍♂️

Met deze onderzoeksvragen reisde TENT,(huis voor hedendaags circus) vorig jaar af naar Noord-Londen, naar dé plek voor hedendaags circus in de UK, Jacksons Lane, in het kader van hun Fast Forward traject vanuit het Fonds Podiumkunsten. Dit traject biedt mid career-podiumkunstenaars in staat om hun vleugels internationaal uit te slaan en kennis uit te wisselen met andere professionals.

In opdracht van het Fonds Podiumkunsten volgde ik, Maaike Muis, anderhalf jaar TENT tijdens deze internationale uitwisseling en maakte er drie podcastafleveringen van ongeveer 20 minuten, in het Engels. Ze zijn los van elkaar te beluisteren en vormen een kleine serie:

"How does international collaboration work in practice and how can you optimize it as a Dutch production house? Are there different rules when it comes to audience engagement and marketing? What can we - and the Dutch circus community - learn from the working practices of Jacksons Lane and producer Split Second in the United Kingdom, particularly in the way they make their 'home' accessible to everyone?" 🙌🤸‍♂️

With these research questions, TENT (a home for contemporary circus) traveled to North London last year, to the hub for contemporary circus in the UK, Jacksons Lane, as part of their Fast Forward program funded by the Performing Arts Fund. This program enables mid-career performing artists to spread their wings internationally and exchange knowledge with other professionals.

Commissioned by the Performing Arts Fund Netherlands , I, Maaike Muis, followed TENT during this international exchange for a year and a half and created three podcast episodes of approximately 20 minutes each, in English. They can be listened to independently and form a mini-series:
