  • S4E22 : A True Show of Beauty : Cece Asuncion : Director of Scouting and Development, Slay Model Management

As we close out an incredible Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and into LGBTQ Pride month, Jayzen has a special guest who identifies as part of both communities.  Be sure to check out LeadWithYourBrand.com/aapi to listen to our entire collection of AAPI Voices.  In addition, stay tuned through the entire month of June as we celebrate our LGBTQ family with amazing career and personal brand stories.

When you’re thinking about your brand, it can be easy to focus only on the things that you do to showcase your key skills and abilities, that is the things you want to be known for.  However, it is important to remember that your brand is also as much about what you choose not to do.  We all can be a “jack of all trades,” but as Jayzen always teaches, “if you’re trying to be something to everyone, you’re really nothing to no one.”  Focus on the talents that keep your brand moving in the right direction.

To celebrate both AAPI Heritage Month and into LGBTQ Pride month, Jayzen is thrilled to welcome Cece Asuncion to the show.  CeCe is a pioneer in the modeling industry, as the founder and Director of Scouting and Development for Slay Model Management, the world’s only all trans modeling agency.

"You can be whatever you want and do whatever you want, but it is about doing it on-brand"  Jayzen shares his experience of visiting the immersive Barbie World pop-up recently in Los Angeles.  One of the big takeaways…Barbie is always on-brand.  Whether it’s running for President, or being an astronaut or doctor, Barbie does it all…and always on-brand.  Sure she is a doll that is designed that way, but in your career, you can tap into your vast skills and take on new challenges, but it always has to be on-brand for you.

"If you're just part of the crowd, societal bias jumps in.  Bust through it by being seen for the value that you bring."  This week, Jayzen shares a key tenet of the Lead With Your Brand system, busting bias.  If you are human, you have bias. We all face some level of societal bias, but this is especially true for diverse people or those from marginalized communities.  If you don’t lead with your tailwinds, that is the attributes that you want to be known for, you’re going to be only known for the bias that someone puts on you.  Break through it by showing up everyday with what you want to be known for and the value that you bring, not a stereotype or job title.

To launch AAPI Heritage Month, Jayzen is excited to welcome Senna Bayasgalan to the show.  She has had incredible career success and recently took the role of Managing Director of Marketing & Communications at Global Private Capital Association. Senna is passionate about guiding brands to prioritize purpose over product, and she takes pride in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within her company and community. This week, Jayzen is excited to share one of our top fan favorite episodes from the library featuring his guest, Snehal Desai. Snehal was recently named artistic director of the famed Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles, making him the first person of color to lead the organization.

“I'm the child of immigrants, I grew up in a very small town in Pennsylvania, I'm queer, I'm South Asian, and I came of age post 9/11. So there were a lot of things that had me be the outsider in the room. Early in life, I realized that I can be the outsider and be not seen and ignored, or you can utilize that outsider status to actually lead…to take charge to be the one at the head of the group versus the one in the back.” And now, as the leader of the nation’s top Asian-American theater company, Snehal Desai is using his successful career as a storyteller and artist to further his community and the world around us. Forging new paths, Snehal has build an incredible career as a director and producer, expanding the reach of the East West Players to critical acclaim, always staying true to his values and personal brand.

  • S4E5 : Keeping The Human Touch : Rick Elmore, Founder and CEO, Simply Noted

Welcome to the final week of the #LeadWithYourBrandChallenge! Each week in January, Jayzen is breaking down the Lead With Your Brand system into its five steps. Every Tuesday, listen to the podcast & learn about the next step to build your personal brand and help you toward your next Career Breakthrough!  There are even free downloadable worksheets with each step to help you in the process.

    Step Five : Promote Yourself

You have heard the old saying, “if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it really make a sound?” The same thing is true about your brand. You can do all of the work to put it down on paper and be thoughtful about your actions and your choices. But, if no one is hearing about it, nobody knows about you.

There are three ways to really think about this. One is your advertisement. This is what you say about yourself. You control this message. What is your elevator pitch? How do you show up on brand and what do you say in a meeting or on a conference call.

Second, is all about your influencers – your SuperFans.  Who are the people that are your brand ambassadors? These SuperFans love you and talk about you when you’re not in the room. What have you done lately to make sure that you are top of their mind?

The final element is word-of-mouth. There is no easy solution to this. You must show up on-brand with your actions and behaviors every single day. This is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. This should be an amazing tailwind that helps your brand moving further and faster in the right direction. Without self-management, it could wind up being a headwind that is causing drag on your brand.

Jayzen is thrilled to welcome Rick Elmore to the show.  A former player in the NFL, Rick has gone on to be the founder and CEO of Simply Noted - one of the coolest new companies in business!  In this digital age, Rick and his team are recapturing the incredible impact of handwritten notes, only now on a massive scale using the latest robotic technology.

  • S4E4 : Commitment to Community : Daphne Kwok, Vice President, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Asian American & Pacific Islander Audience Strategy, AARP

Welcome to Week 4 of the #LeadWithYourBrandChallenge!

Step Four: Keep Up Your Image

Now that you have created your five to eight SuperSized brand attributes, you have to live them every single day. The bottom line is a Brand isn’t about words that you put on paper. It’s about the actions and the choices you make every single day. Take those brand attributes and peel the layers back. Imagine that you are on a reality show. We have had a film crew follow you all last week. We are playing the tape back and watching. What are the things that we would see do? What would we hear you say and how would you say it? What are the things you do that we would label as your brand attributes? Ultimately, leading with your brand is about observable actions and behaviors that you must demonstrate every day. Document a list of these behaviors and start emulating them in a consciously, competent way.

Great brands think about their brand filter. Create your formula that determines the way that you dress, the way that you maintain your office space, and most importantly, the way you create your signature projects. No matter how boring a project or task you’ve been given, you can do it in a way that brings your brand attributes to life and really promotes you.

Jayzen is excited to welcome Daphne Kwok to the show.  Her work as the Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Asian American & Pacific Islander Audience Strategy at AARP empowers Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) to choose how they live as they age.  Previously, Ms. Kwok was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2010 to chair his Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Every Tuesday, listen to the podcast & learn about the next step to build your personal brand and help you toward your next Career Breakthrough!  There are even free downloadable worksheets with each step to help you in the process.

Step Three: Refine Who You Want To Be

Now it’s time to turn up the volume to be the best you you can be. Take those 5 to 8 brand attributes that you came up with in the last step. Go through the McDonald’s drive-through and SUPERSIZE your words and define those attributes as your SUPERPOWERS. Take those words and switch them from being commodity descriptors that everyone uses and make them uniquely you.

Don’t just say, “I’m a good presenter.” Say, “I’m a showman!” It’s not, “hey I’m well networked and have great relationships with people.” it’s, “I’m a super connector!”  Why just be analytical when you can be a Data Guru? If you are organized, are you really a Precision Executor? If you are innovative, are you really a First-Mover who is the first to jump onto new ideas and trends?  These super-charged ownable words now become your word bank for Linkedin, annual reviews, job applications, how you talk about yourself and how you present your ideas.
