Ep 7: Beyond The Diagnosis: A Fresh Look at Childhood, Health, & the Freedom to Become with Dawn Lester
2h 1m | Nov 2, 2026In this episode of Know Thy Healing, I sit down with Dawn Lester for a wide-ranging conversation about childhood, health, parenting, environment, medical narratives, trauma, human potential, and what it truly means to raise and nurture healthy children.
Dawn Lester is an independent researcher and author dedicated to uncovering the truth behind the prevailing narratives that shape our understanding of the world.
Following a decade-long, deep-dive investigation into the nature of health and disease, Dawn co-authored the seminal work What Really Makes You Ill? Why Everything You Thought You Knew About Disease Is Wrong.
Her writing bridges the gap between complex investigative research and accessible insight, challenging readers to question the foundations of everything they have been taught.
Dawn’s work is driven by a commitment to empowerment, encouraging us to take full responsibility, not only for our own well-being but for how we raise, protect, and nurture our children. She advocates for a return to critical inquiry, urging everyone, especially parents and caregivers, to look past official dogma and rediscover our true, innate potential as human beings.
Her latest book, A Fresh Look at Childhood Illness, builds upon her previous work and discusses the many reasons for placing a strong emphasis on our approach to raising and nurturing children in all areas of life, not just health.
Together, we explore the importance of the environments children grow up in — physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially — and how stress, family dynamics, instability, trauma, lifestyle, and other environmental influences can shape a child’s behavior, health, development, and ability to adapt.
We discuss the ACE studies, childhood diagnoses such as ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder, and whether many diagnostic labels can obscure the deeper context of what a child has experienced or the environments they are being asked to adapt to. We also explore children who simply do not fit comfortably into the conventional mold of sitting still, following rigid schedules, staying indoors, conforming, and behaving exactly as expected.
From there, we move into vaccinations, the vitamin K shot, circumcision, food, medicine, navigating the medical system, and the practical choices parents face when trying to create healthier environments for their children.
The conversation also takes on a deeper philosophical and spiritual dimension as we explore how we should understand children in the first place — not as beings to shape and control, but as individuals with their own nature, potential, and path.
We talk about trauma, identity, awareness, faith, and the distinction between experiencing something and becoming identified with it. Difficult experiences can be acknowledged and learned from without becoming the defining story of a person’s life.
At its core, this episode is about raising children with greater awareness, discernment, responsibility, and trust — creating the conditions for them to thrive physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually while allowing them the freedom to become who they are meant to be.
