Season 3: Episode 3 | Why Your Patients Aren’t Completing Their Treatment Journey
15m | Aug 31, 2026Welcome back to Season 3 of the Grow Your Healthcare Practice Podcast!
Your patients may understand what’s happening in today’s appointment. But do they understand the full journey you’re asking them to take?
In this episode, Anne and Phumla explore what they call “The Invisible Roadmap Problem”: what happens when the practitioner can clearly see the treatment journey, but the patient can’t.
You may know exactly where a patient is now, what needs to happen next and what successful completion of treatment looks like. But if that roadmap only exists in your head, your treatment plan or a conversation the patient had with you weeks ago, they may be working with a very different picture.
And when they start feeling better, it’s easy for them to assume: “I’m better, so I must be done.”
Through practical healthcare scenarios, Anne and Phumla explore how making the patient journey more visible can support continuity of care, create clearer expectations and reduce the amount of reactive follow-up the practitioner has to carry.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why patients can disengage from treatment even when they’re making good clinical progress.
- What The Invisible Roadmap Problem looks like inside a healthcare practice.
- Why explaining the treatment journey once may not be enough for patients to understand where they are and what comes next.
- How to turn your existing treatment journey into something patients can actually see and refer back to.
- Why a simple stage check-in at the end of each session can help patients understand their progress and next step.
- How structured follow-up can reduce the time you spend reactively chasing patients who haven’t rebooked.
- The difference between reactive practice management and proactively designing systems that support both the patient and the practice.

- Booklet 4: Informed Consent
Your challenge this week:
Take the treatment journey that currently exists in your head and make it visible.
Choose one of your core services and map out:
- Where does the patient begin?
- What are the key stages of their treatment?
- How will they know they're making progress?
- What happens at each stage?
- What does successfully completing the journey look like?
Then turn it into something simple your patients can actually see — whether that's a one-page infographic, a treatment-room visual, a graphic included in your communication, or another format that works for your practice.
At the end of each session, use that roadmap to show the patient:
This is where you started.
This is where you are now.
And this is where we're going next.
Because a strong patient journey shouldn't depend on your patients remembering everything you explained several weeks ago.
If you can see the map, make sure they can see it too.
