Your Physical Health Depends on Your Mental Health with Ivan Francisco Ruiz Gamez
In this episode of Girls with Grafts, Rachel sits down with burn survivor Ivan Francisco Ruiz Gamez for a powerful conversation about recovery, grief, mental health, and finding purpose after life-changing loss. 🎙️
Ivan was just 11 years old when an RZR accident left him with burns on more than 90% of his body and took the life of his father. He spent seven months in the ICU at Shriners Children’s Northern California and has undergone more than 50 surgeries. Ivan shares what it was like to navigate both physical recovery and grief at such a young age, return to school, adjust to unwanted attention, and lean on his family—especially his mom—through some of his hardest moments.
Now 20, Ivan is studying psychology with plans to work with children and is giving back through Spanish SOAR and burn survivor camps. He and Rachel talk about the connection between mental and physical health, the impact of connecting with people who understand, and why Ivan wants other young people to know that life can still hold so much possibility after trauma. ❤️
Ivan leaves listeners with a message he continues to live by: keep doing what you love, even if you have to find a new way to do it, and keep looking for something beautiful in life worth holding onto.

Meet Our Guest
Ivan Francisco Ruiz Gamez is a 20-year-old burn survivor from Mexico, where he continues to live today. His burn injury occurred on June 18, 2018, when he was 11 years old. While traveling with his father in Baja California Sur, they were involved in an RZR accident that resulted in the loss of his father. Following the accident, Ivan was transferred to Shriners Children’s Northern California, where he spent seven months in the ICU. He sustained second- and third-degree burns over 90% of his body and has undergone more than 50 surgeries over the past eight years. Throughout his recovery, his mother has remained by his side, providing ongoing support. Ivan is currently in his third year of studying psychology and hopes to specialize in working with children.
