Our Scars Shouldn’t Be Your Halloween Inspiration

1h 3m | Nov 3, 2023

Halloween is a time for fun, but let’s not forget that it can be tough for those with facial and visible differences. Portraying a burn survivor or someone with physical disfigurements can be extremely disrespectful and triggering. Additionally, burn survivors see an increase of harmful and hurtful messages during the spooky season.

In today’s podcast, we sit down with influencer Tonya Meisenbach, better known as Burned Beauty 2018. Tonya shares her thoughts on Halloween and the negative comments and questions she’s been receiving. We also chat about how survivors and those with visible differences are portrayed in Hollywood. From Darth Vader in Star Wars to Scar in The Lion King, filmmakers have long made a link between physical disfigurement and evil.

About Tonya Meisenbach

Tonya Meisenbach, better known as Burned Beauty 2018, is a wife, mother of two adult children, luminary, and humanitarian currently living in Atlanta, GA.

Formerly a Paralegal and Realtor, Tonya has always enjoyed helping and elevating others. After being burned over 35% of her upper body and almost losing the battle, nothing has changed, Tonya turned her pain into purpose, and although Tonya's methodology is different, the end goal remains the same, elevating others.

Tonya now uses hair, makeup, tutorials, and social media to help inspire other burn survivors in their recovery. She wants all survivors to understand that their wounds will heal, and that with the right mindset, they can and accomplish anything and overcome any obstacle thrown in their path.
