When Allison and her husband bought their hobby farm, they also absorbed a few passive income streams that already existed on the farm. Horse boarding was one of them, but it didn't take long for them to realize that this wasn't the right revenue stream for them. We had a pretty solid idea and an on-paper plan for what we wanted to do with our land well before we even finished buying it. But even still -- the mindset shift from homesteading to farmsteading (ie making money from your homestead) really requires you to re-evaluate some components and features of your land to decide IF you can make money from it and HOW you'll do that. A property that's ideal for homesteading may not be as conducive to "business use" as you'd initially think.

It's fairly easy to look at things critically and determine if homesteading is a good fit for your family -- look at things like income and available cash, desire to do the work, and whether it's compatible with the life you want to live (ie working for food vs world travelers, for example), etc. But what about the gray areas, the things no one really talks about? The things you can't concretely and quickly "solve" about this life? Things like feeling alone because no one you know "gets it," or reasoning out WHY you prefer the hard work of raising your food over simply hitting the grocery store. Who can you turn to? How can you overcome these hurdles?

Sometimes getting to your dreams is a straight line. Sometimes it's worse than the world's most twisty rollercoaster.

We've been somewhere in the middle but towards the rollercoaster side of things. Between kids, cancer, and covid, it's been a strange path to get to where we are.

But if we can make it through all the hurdles that keep flying at us, anyone can.

We are living proof that having faith and pushing for your dreams is absolutely the magic combination to find good living in your every day. Because here we are, doing just that -- living on acreage, building our dream farm from the ground up, and seeing new pieces of our farm freedom dreams fall into place on an almost daily basis.

In this episode, we're sharing a deeper dive into our story -- more than just "well, we were in the suburbs, and then we moved." That short of a story doesn't do any of it justice, and it doesn't help YOU get motivated to live your biggest and wildest dreams.
