S@#@ Out of Luck: The Cannibal of Atizapan

18m | Sep 26, 2026

In May 2021, 72-year-old retired butcher Andrés Filomeno Mendoza Celis was arrested in Atizapán de Zaragoza, Mexico — caught in the act by the husband of his latest victim. Inside his house, police found 4,600 skeletal remains under the floor, videotapes of the murders, a notebook listing his victims, and trophies going back decades. He confessed to 30 murders over twenty years — and to eating some of his victims. He wasn't caught by a task force or a profiler. He was caught by Bruno Ángel Portillo — a police commander who solved his own wife's disappearance himself, after the system told him to wait. This is the story of the Cannibal of Atizapán, and how he was caught.
