- The Culture of Freaknik
Freaknik was an annual spring break event that took place in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States between 1983 and 1997. It was a celebration of black culture and music that drew thousands of college students and young people from across the country.
The event was known for its party atmosphere, with music, dancing, and drinking taking place on the streets of Atlanta. However, it also had a reputation for being rowdy and sometimes violent, leading to calls for it to be shut down.
Despite this controversy, Freaknik remains a cultural touchstone for many in the African American community, representing a time of joy and celebration in the face of adversity.
In this episode, we invite Byanka, an Atlanta native, and Clark Atlanta alumni to discuss the culture of Freaknik and Atlanta.

Hello, beautiful people!
I have a question. Why are we struggling with what’s appropriate and what’s not? Many people do not support the Black community. It’s 2024, and we are dealing with prejudice and discrimination on numerous levels with racism. To feel like a person shouldn’t be treated or respected as a human being in equal measure is inhumane. Chan and I discuss how discrimination and prejudice show up in the treatment of Black people in America.
Discrimination: The process of making unfair or prejudicial distinctions between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong, such as race, gender, age, religion, physical attractiveness, or sexual orientation.
Prejudice: An affective feeling towards a person based on their perceived group membership. The word often refers to a preconceived evaluation or classification of another person.

In this episode, we discuss “Being Twice as Good” in America.
We, as Black individuals in America, have historically faced systemic discrimination and racism, which has contributed to a significant disadvantage in various areas of life. Black individuals have been subjected to unequal treatment in education, employment, housing, and even healthcare. This has led to a disproportionate number of black individuals living in poverty, having lower incomes, and experiencing higher rates of unemployment compared to other racial groups.
This has also led to us working harder than our counterparts to receive the same level of respect or opportunity.
It is important to recognize that systemic racism and discrimination still exist in the United States, and it is essential to work toward creating a more equitable and just society for all individuals, regardless of race. By acknowledging and addressing these issues, we can work towards a more inclusive and fair society where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.

In this episode, we discuss “Coming Up Black” in America. Growing up as a Black child can be a unique experience with challenges and opportunities. We as children may be faced with racial discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes, which can have a lasting impact on their self-esteem and sense of identity.
However, there are also many positive aspects of growing up in Black American culture, such as a strong sense of community, family values, and pride in one's heritage.
We discuss growing up in neighborhoods where we experienced racism and discrimination from a young age. In the form of micro-aggressions, such as being followed around a store or being assumed to be less intelligent than their white peers.
