After a few false starts (as discussed in episode 0), lightning strikes! Five “teenagers with attitude” (and one more later) are recruited by an interdimensional wizard to battle a space witch bent on world domination. (Of course!) This season lays the groundwork for everything that follows: the tropes, the Zords, the campiness, and more. No matter how many actors have been Rangers and villains, whenever the franchise is rebooted, filmmakers use these iconic characters from season one. Nathan and Michael discuss how, thanks to Power Rangers, tokusatsu (Japanese for “special filmmaking”) was the most popular thing on kids’ TV for a hot minute. They also unpack this season’s themes, including coming-of-age stories and evil’s instinctive drive to destroy and/or corrupt what is good.

For a more detailed discussion of the epic five-part story, “Green with Evil,” check out an upcoming episode of Nathan’s main podcast, The Monster Island Film Vault, which features Michael as a guest!
