- ArTEEtude Episode #221: The Odyssey of Digital Consciousness with Detlef Schlich
Today, in Episode #221, 'Navigating the Digital Current: From Calculation to Digital Consciousness,' we dive deeper into the waters of the digital era. We've observed how the development of the Polaroid, with its magical blend of chemistry and light, served as a poignant allegory for human advancement. Now, we shift our gaze to the realm of calculation, where numbers, algorithms, and data not only shape our understanding of the world but begin to define the very essence of our reality.
As we stand on the shores of this digital expanse, we'll explore how the transition from physical development to digital calculation has transformed every facet of our lives—from the way we communicate and create, to how we perceive identity and consciousness itself. What does it mean to live in a world where our experiences, memories, and even our emotions can be digitized, analyzed, and reimagined? How has the shift to digital calculation altered our relationship with the natural world, our societies, and with ourselves?

Summary:
In the thought-provoking episode "Shadows of Prosperity: Unveiling the Moral Dilemmas of Military Economic Growth Through Fiction," the "ArTEEtude" podcast, under the stewardship of Detlef Schlich, embarks on an innovative exploration of the intricate relationship between military economic growth and its societal ramifications. This episode distinguishes itself by employing a distinctive narrative technique, utilizing fictional characters to delve into the ethical, emotional, and societal complexities that emerge from the prosperity linked to the arms industry.
Through the lives of three meticulously crafted personas—Alexej, a conscientious worker in an arms factory; Marina, the resilient spouse of a military official; and Igor, a former military officer turned peace advocate—the episode weaves a compelling narrative that challenges listeners to confront deep-seated moral questions. These characters serve as conduits, each providing unique insights into the personal and collective consequences of a society entrenched in militarization for economic gains.
Alexej's narrative opens a window into the personal conflict and moral ambiguity experienced by individuals contributing to the military-industrial complex, juxtaposing financial stability against ethical considerations. Marina's story further humanizes the discourse, presenting the silent sacrifices and the emotional toll on families behind the military facade. Finally, Igor's transformation and advocacy for peace illuminate the potential for change, advocating for dialogue and reconciliation over conflict.
"Shadows of Prosperity" stands out for its creative approach to discussing a traditionally empirical subject through the lens of fictional storytelling, thereby fostering a deeper understanding and engagement with the topic. The episode skillfully navigates the intersections of art, digital culture, and societal critique, encouraging a reflective and nuanced conversation among its audience. By presenting a balanced discourse through fictional narratives, the podcast invites listeners to examine their own perspectives on the ethics of prosperity through military means and the broader implications for global peace and human dignity.
This episode not only contributes to the academic and cultural discourse on the complexities of military economic growth but also exemplifies the power of art and storytelling in stimulating critical thought and empathy. In this podcast episode, I delve into the creation of an avant-garde rendition of "Silent Night," transforming the classic carol into a poignant piece of multi-layered art. The episode begins by discussing the inspiration behind the song – a desire to reflect the current global state of unrest and yearning for peace through a darker, more realistic version of the traditional Christmas melody.
I highlight my collaboration with Dirk Schlömer, whose musical expertise brought depth and haunting resonance to the lyrics. This cross-geographical collaboration, with recordings in Berlin and Ballinspittle, symbolizes a melding of artistic disciplines and perspectives.
The episode then shifts focus to the visual aspect of the project. I describe creating a compelling video using footage from Berlin, blended with personal shots from Ballinspittle. This visual narrative is further enriched using AI-generated images, carefully selected to represent the song's themes of war, peace, light, and darkness.
I explain how DaVinci Resolve played a crucial role in the project, allowing me to seamlessly integrate these diverse visual elements into a cohesive and impactful story that accompanies the song.
Concluding the episode, I emphasize that this project transcends the boundaries of a typical song or video. It's a profound statement that leverages creativity to mirror the complexities of our world, aiming to challenge, provoke thought, and inspire change.
Listeners are invited to experience the depth and intricacies of the song and its accompanying video, reflecting on the powerful messages embedded in each layer of the project.

In this episode, delve with Detlef SChlich and John Adams into the artist's intense journey of creation, where days blend into nights in a solitary quest for expression.
Host Detlef Schlich explores the depths of creativity with John Adams in Cobh, Ireland, at his Gallery house.
John shares his journey, starting with his expulsion from four art colleges and his subsequent disillusionment with art. He recounts his move to London in 1985, where he pursued a career in rock music as a drummer and formed a successful band called the Crawdaddies. During this time, John grappled with personal loss and a dark state of mind, often resorting to alcohol and drugs.
Despite the challenges, John's time in London was marked by transformation. He bluffed his way into carpentry, learning the trade through a series of firings, earning him the nickname "Down the Road Johnny." His persistence eventually led him to his desired job in theatre set painting, where he worked on significant projects for London's biggest theatres, Pinewood Studios, and even Disneyland Paris.
John's artistic reawakening occurred when he joined a group of artists squatting in an old suntan lotion factory, which they transformed into a thriving art centre. Despite its eventual shutdown, John continued his community work by squatting and renovating the old Dole office in Brixton, turning it into a gallery and community space funded by parties and supported by the local police.
However, the roughness of London took its toll, with John experiencing multiple assaults over the years. A traumatic event in 1996, where a young boy died in his arms, compelled John to leave London and return to Cork. Back in Cork, he was commissioned to create a significant painting, which facilitated his move and integration into the local art scene.
In Cork, John joined the Backwater Artist Studios and, recognizing the lack of exhibition spaces, opened his studio to the public, inadvertently starting a tradition that involved the entire studio community.
John’s paintings are in many prominent collections such as the Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork City Council, The Royal College of Surgeons, Cork City Library, President Michael D Higgins and many more private and public collections.
