Concept Care Explains: The SCHADS Award for Disability Support Workers in Sydney
11m | Sep 1, 2026In this episode of the Concept Care podcast, we explain the SCHADS Award and what it means for disability support workers in Sydney.
If you work in disability support, you may have heard the term SCHADS Award in a job advertisement, during an interview, or on your payslip. But what does it actually mean, and how can it affect your pay and workplace entitlements?
In this episode, we break down the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award in simple terms. We look at minimum pay rates, employee classifications, penalty rates, overtime, allowances, breaks, leave entitlements and different employment arrangements.
We also discuss how disability support workers may be classified based on factors such as qualifications, experience, responsibilities and the complexity of their work. You’ll learn about penalty rates for evening, night, weekend and public holiday work, as well as important considerations around sleepover shifts and broken shifts.
The episode also covers overtime and extra hours, common allowances such as laundry, uniform, first aid, vehicle, broken shift and sleepover allowances, and the differences between casual, part-time and full-time employment.
We explain the importance of keeping copies of your employment contract and payslips, tracking your hours, checking your classification and understanding which allowances may apply to your role.
Whether you’re new to disability support or have years of experience, understanding your employment conditions can help you feel more confident about your career and workplace entitlements.
We also introduce Concept Care and the opportunities available for support workers who want to use their knowledge, skills and abilities to provide positive outcomes for people in the community.
