The Halifax Explosion: Two Ships, One Harbour, Two Thousand Dead | 5 Minute Strange

7m | Aug 6, 2026

On the morning of December sixth, nineteen seventeen, two ships tried to pass each other in the Narrows — the tight channel running through Halifax Harbour. The Imo was leaving. The Mont-Blanc was arriving, loaded with picric acid, TNT, guncotton, and drums of benzol on deck. Their movements became confused, the channel was tight, and the decisions happened too fast. The collision set the benzol on fire. The Mont-Blanc's crew, knowing exactly what the ship was carrying, abandoned her and rowed for shore shouting warnings nobody understood in time. At nine-oh-four in the morning, the Mont-Blanc exploded.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the Halifax Explosion — the largest man-made explosion before the atomic bomb. The blast flattened the Richmond district, shattered windows kilometres away, drove the harbour water outward as a wave, and was followed that night by a snowstorm over a city where thousands of people had lost homes, windows, and shelter. Around two thousand people died. Many of the injured lost their sight because they had been watching the burning ship from windows when the blast arrived.
