The London Beer Flood: A Broken Hoop and Eight People Dead | 5 Minute Strange

5m | Aug 3, 2026

On October seventeenth, eighteen fourteen, a single iron hoop slipped on a massive brewery vat at the Horse Shoe Brewery on Tottenham Court Road in London. A clerk noticed it and reported it. No emergency was declared. About an hour later the vat burst, and the pressure smashed into neighbouring vats, releasing hundreds of thousands of gallons of porter beer that poured through the brewery walls and into the cramped streets of St Giles. Eight people died — mostly women and children from the tenements beside the brewery. In one house, mourners gathered for a child's wake were caught in the flood.

In this episode of 5 Minute Strange, we cover the London Beer Flood and the neighbourhood it destroyed — the warning that was noticed and not acted on, the deaths in the homes of people who had no connection to the brewery except proximity, and the inquest that ruled the deaths accidental and allowed the company to claim excise duty back on the beer that had poured into the streets instead of being sold. The brewery continued operating. The families beside it had no equivalent recovery.
