In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Shuangyi Li, Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature and Cultures at the University of Bristol, whose research spans comparative and world literature, transcultural and translingual writing, translation, intermediality, and the work of Chinese and diasporic writer-artists including Gao Xingjian.

In discussing the chapter “Escaping Prestige” from my book The Social Life of the Nobel Prize in Literature, we dive into the paradoxes of literary prestige through Gao Xingjian’s life and work following his 2000 Nobel Prize in Literature. Taking the idea of the Nobel as a potential “kiss of death” as our starting point, we explore Gao’s desire for a “second escape” from the fame, recognition, and monumentalization brought by the Prize. Dr. Li discusses the relationship between Gao’s painting, cinema, and other artistic practices, as we consider how l’année Gao brings poetry, painting, theatre, opera, and film into a transmedial reflection on death, freedom, and immortality. Finally, we examine a central paradox of Gao’s post-Nobel career: while Nobel prestige threatens his artistic autonomy, the cultural, social, and economic capital generated by that same prestige also enables some of his most ambitious artistic experiments.
