- 230. Why I'm Saying No
Welcome to another episode of the show as Jesse and I dive deep into a topic that's been on my mind and in my heart - the power of saying no. It's not a popular subject, but it's certainly something that I have been learning and living through lately.
Listen in as I share the challenges I faced in finding the right time to talk about it, amid the busy chaos of our lives. Amidst these challenges, our family has also been providing extensive childcare for a little boy we used to foster, and it's been incredibly demanding and pushed us to our limits.
I also share how learning to say no allowed us to delegate responsibilities, creating opportunities for others to step up and serve, and I give a very timely example by announcing that I have recently stepped down from my nonprofit board chair role. I emphasize the importance of recognizing our limits and having the courage to say no where necessary, trusting that it not only protects our well-being but also opens doors for others to step up and say yes.
We really hope that you will join Jesse and I in this episode as we unravel the complexities of saying no when we need to and the unexpected blessings that it can bring!

Prepare to dive into a topic that might make some of you a bit uncomfortable but is incredibly important for the health of your marriage - secrets of sex and marriage. My friend Shaunti Feldhahn is the author of the book Secrets of Sex and Marriage: 8 Surprises That Make All the Difference, and she and I are excited to discuss this because it's a topic that many couples struggle with but often don't openly address. We explore the surprises teased in her book title, from understanding what's normal to the different types of desire, and most importantly, effective communication.
One of the key takeaways from our discussion is that intimacy isn't just about physical connection; it's about knowing your spouse in the deepest, most vulnerable way possible. When you can truly understand your partner's fears, desires, and needs, you can build a stronger emotional and physical connection. Shanti has also created a workbook, "Unlocking an Intimate Marriage," to complement the book and guide couples in fostering profound connections beyond just the bedroom, so whether you're in a thriving marriage or facing challenges, this episode has something valuable to offer, and I encourage you to join us on this journey of discovery and connection!

We discuss the challenges of maintaining healthy relationships with loved ones and strangers in a digital world full of distractions, highlighting how parents are often juggling the demands of family and work. We touch upon the growing concern around the relationship between children and social media, and we talk about the importance of being present and attentive to loved ones. I’m so honored to have Sissy Goff back in the studio to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent: Living in Confidence So Your Kids Can Too. When Sissy was here a couple years ago for her book Raising Worry Free Girls, the response was phenomenal, and to this day, I still hear from so many parents who were deeply impacted by that book!
A counselor for over 30 years who helps families through her counseling practice, Sissy joins me today to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent. I highly recommend this book if you have ever struggled with feeling like you aren’t doing enough as a parent or stressing over the present and the future for your kids.
In this episode, Sissy shares how so many kids today are dealing with anxiety that actually stems from their parents’ own anxiety. She gives practical tools parents can implement immediately to help them feel less uptight, scared, or stressed about how they might be messing up their kids or missing the mark as a parent.
I especially appreciated how honest she was about how trying to bubble wrap and protect our kids from struggle is actually a way we end up hurting our kids and making life harder for them in the long run.
She shares how anxiety in both parents and kids can stem from intrusive thoughts becoming stuck in a “loop rollercoaster” in our minds. In our conversation, I ask her to walk us through calming techniques to help shift us out of that loop. We talk about what it looks like to get to the root of where our worry and fear is coming from and what to do about it.
This is another powerful episode that you don’t want to miss!
In This Episode
[00:35] – Sissy Goff returns to the podcast today!
[4:04] – A suggestion from Sissy’s editor prompted her to write two books.
[8:55] – It’s normal for parents to worry, but anxiety is when intrusive thoughts become stuck and take control.
[13:49] – Parents should realize that many times their anxiety stems from wanting the best for their kids.
[15:04] – What it looks like to practice deep breathing and grounding techniques.
[18:22] – My anxiety stemmed from caring too much about what others thought of my parenting.
[19:50] – Sissy feels that mothers are too hard on themselves nowadays.
[22:42] – The five different types of parenting.
[25:49] – Letting your kids experience discomfort helps build character and resilience in them.
[28:30] – How releasing my need for control to God helps alleviate my anxiety.

In this podcast episode, Jesse and I discuss three unexpected life changes that I have made over this summer -- inspired by a blood test I took earlier this year. I share why I made them, how I'm tracking them (and an app that has worked so well!) and the unexpected impact they have made on my life. We also talk about how these have turned into some daily choices that are now habits that I do without thinking.
While I don't expect you to make these same changes, I hope this episode can serve as inspiration and motivation that small consistent tweaks to our life can add up to big overall changes. I'd love to hear if you set any goals as a result of listening and I'd love to hear the accountability you set in place for your goals.
In This Episode
[00:35] – Today’s topic is about the three big changes that I’ve made to my routine this summer.
[02:16] – Jesse had so much fun on his recent fishing trip with Silas.
[07:18] – We just got back home last night from a trip to Branson, Missouri.
[08:59] – Hear about the exciting events that happened before we left — and on the trip itself!
[14:04] – We stayed in a condo on the trip instead of a hotel.
[17:49] – We had a blast in Silver Dollar City, but it was definitely hot!
[20:23] – Jesse and I started listening to The Fountains of Silence on the trip.
[22:21] – I move into talking about my three unexpected life changes.
[23:43] – Because I like alliteration, I called the goals: sun, steps, and sleep.
[25:10] – The app I’m using is called Strides.
[30:59] – Starting my day with sunlight and fresh air has been so good for me.
[31:46] – Learn what I have learned about my sleep schedule.
[33:18] – This has also encouraged our kids, too.
[35:10] – My main objective has been a healthier lifestyle. What is your why?

I have really been looking forward to this topic and to having this guest on the show for weeks because a question that I frequently get asked on social media is regarding friendship and how I go about making friends.
What do you do if you’re dealing with feeling like no one ever invites you to do anything and you are lonely? My guest today, Laura Tremaine is the perfect person to help me tackle this topic because she has written a whole book about it titled The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs!
Laura joins me today to discuss friendship and community especially when it comes to women. She discusses how women struggle to make and then keep friends as adults and how the pandemic made the struggle even worse for some people, and then she recommends that we think of friends as a life council (hence the title of her book) of different types of people who each bring different strengths to our lives.
We also talk about how unrealistic expectations of others and of friendships can be harmful because they can lead to disappointment. I love how she encourages us in practical ways to look around and see the gifts in people already in our lives. It's so easy to miss that and to take those already in our lives for granted.
Laura also shares personally about recognizing her own weaknesses (not prioritizing returning texts promptly enough and more) and how she worked on being more intentional in these areas in order to show her friends love in ways that would be meaningful to them. She also leaves listeners with some helpful advice, encouraging lonely women to not give up, to keep trying with new friends but to get rid of the narrative that they tell themselves that they are unlikable. She challenges us to let go of holding too tightly to our idea of a perfect friendship to make space for appreciating the people already in our lives and being in a healthy space to allow new friendships to bloom.
Laura helps us understand how to reframe friendships and think of them from a brand-new perspective. Many of the things she shared in this episode are things I've thought about time and time again since we recorded this.

Is there something that you are relying on to give you joy, fulfillment, or that you just feel like you “have to have” or “can’t live without”? I was recently convicted about how much I was relying upon sugar… and it inspired me to try doing a three-week-long no sugar challenge.
In this episode, we share why and how I went twenty-one days without sugar as well and what changes I experienced along the way. Don’t worry! The purpose of this episode is not to shame you for your sugar intake or even to try to convince you to give it up, but I hope it inspires you in some way to consider if there’s something you are relying upon in an unhealthy way.
We start the episode by sharing some life updates, what books we have been reading, and an interesting drink I’ve been drinking recently and then we move into talking about how Natalie Runion inadvertently inspired me to this no-sugar challenge for twenty-one days. I share the reason why I have decided to do this, why I have not been extremely militant about the rules, what has surprised me about this challenge, and how it has made a difference in my life.
As I said, though, the purpose of this episode is not to shame you for something like sugar consumption or to try to convince you to do what I have been doing. This is my own personal journey that I am choosing to share, and I don’t even have a plan yet for what I am doing after my twenty-one days are up! I just really want to encourage you to think about things that you might be mindlessly using to get through your day in a dysfunctional way.

You may recall from a couple of episodes ago our conversation in which we shared our thoughts on the Shiny Happy People docu-series. That episode was very unplanned and off-the-cuff, so we thought that we would do a follow-up episode because we got a lot of feedback wishing that they had heard more from Jesse.
I am therefore doing my best to let Jesse lead this conversation so that you can hear more of his perspective surrounding the docu-series. Jesse shares how even though he wasn’t directly in the IBLP/ATI program, his church was heavily influenced by it, so listen in as Jesse shares details of his own experience.
He shares what ideals his church had and when he started to question those ideals and move away from legalism. We are so grateful for the lessons that we have learned and how we went into marriage on the same page, and we hope that you get a lot out of Jesse’s words in this episode!

[09:54] - Jesse reveals whether or not he was ever bothered by the ideals.
[11:49] - When did Jesse start questioning things?

[15:58] - Jesse was in college or so when he got out of legalism.
[18:42] - I reflect back on the move from Kansas to Tennessee.
[22:00] - Jesse’s chains of legalism weren’t as strong as mine.

I am so excited to have Natalie Runion on the podcast this week, and this couldn’t have possibly happened at a better time! In the last episode, Jesse and I shared our thoughts about the docu-series Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, and a lot of you reached out to me to say that you have struggled to know how to feel about church because of difficult experiences you have had. Natalie is here to discuss what to do and how to process through church hurt and disappointment, something she has experienced deeply herself.
Natalie has a new book coming out titled Raised to Stay: Persevering in Ministry When You Have a Million Reasons to Walk Away. In this podcast, she shares her story of how she was hurt by the church when she was younger and how she processed through that hurt and disappointment and ended up saying yes to something she never expected she would: be involved in church ministry!
This episode is packed with wisdom and encouragement (Jesse listened to it and said it's one you need to listen to more than once!). Whether you have experienced church hurt and are still walking through it and processing it, whether you've been disappointed by church and are avoiding it altogether, or whether you are just curious about Natalie's story, I believe you'll be very blessed by listening.

[02:08] - Natalie shares a little background on herself and her own story with church hurt.
[05:57] - How did Natalie hold onto God?
[07:25] - Natalie explains her initial responses to this hard situation.
[09:22] - I ask Natalie how she learned to trust again after being so hurt.

[14:38] - What do we do if we have been hurt by church?
[16:58] - How do we avoid being the cause of church hurt?
[19:25] - Is there a difference between hurt and offense?
[23:54] - Natalie offers encouragement, telling us that we are not alone.

This may be one of the most controversial episodes I’ve ever recorded – and also the most personal! Amazon recently released a 4-part docu-series called Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets. While this series focuses on the Duggar family primarily, it dives into the world and beliefs of those who were part of the IBLP/ATI program – which was the program and culture I grew up in.
We got so many requests from people to share our thoughts on the docu-series, so we sat down and recorded a very unscripted podcast on what it was like for me to grow up in this culture + our honest thoughts on the docu-series.
You might not agree with our perspective, but I hope that this episode makes you think and/or encourages you in your journey, whether you may be.

[10:09] - We all bring baggage and dysfunction from childhood.
[12:11] - Jesse and I caught something interesting in the first episode.
