Improving Your Communication Skills
Communication skills are crucial to building and maintaining (and maintaining) strong relationships and to building a solid social network. They help you take good care of yourself, while also being responsive to others' needs. Still, people are not born with flawless communication skills; they're learned over time and through constant practice. And if you are interested to talk with strangers effectively, then let me introduce common questions for you.
So how do we know if we have a communication problem?
The biggest clue is how low we feel about ourselves when it comes to communicating. If you've ever felt chronically low in self esteem, then you probably have a communication skills problem. If you've always been self confident but have suddenly found yourself shy or anxious in certain situations, then you may be suffering from a lack of self confidence.
But don't worry! You don't need to suffer from a lack of self confidence to have communication skills that are low. In fact, having low self esteem or a sense of insecurity about your appearance, weight, height, intelligence, personality, or abilities is usually caused by a lack of communication skills. Or maybe you've had an unsettling childhood experience that left you feeling insecure about something. Whatever the cause, the result is usually the same: a low self esteem.
You need to develop your communication skills and work on becoming more confident so that you can confidently interact with others. If you've ever been the shy, low-confident person who hides their thoughts and feelings behind a mask of distance, then you have a major communication problem that needs to be addressed. It's called self sabotaging behavior. Self sabotaging behaviors are usually caused by a fear of rejection or of not being understood. When you engage in this behavior, you shut down communication instead of opening it up. This inhibits your success in any situation because the other person will be communicating without your ability to control or influence how it's received.
There are many communication skills you can learn to be more confident and successful in social situations. You don't have to suffer from a lack of self esteem because of these skills. Instead of isolating yourself, consider learning social communication. Social communication can be difficult to master, but with practice you can become a successful conversationalist. Learn these communication skills, and before you know it you will be enjoying every social event without feeling self conscious about your body language or your lack of good social skills.
The second step to improving your social skills involves developing your assertiveness. Many times the issue that's leading to lowered self esteem or low confidence is a lack of assertiveness. Being assertive doesn't mean you are aggressively shouting at people, but it does mean that you're assertively making the rules or guidelines for the group. Learning effective communication skills to communicate effectively with others and a sense of assertiveness will improve your relationships and give you a more positive self image.
The last area I want to discuss in this article has to do with self confidence. When you communicate your needs and wants to others you tend to be more confident. This means that you want to take advantage of every opportunity you have to communicate your ideas and opinions to the group. This sense of self confident communication skills is one of the most powerful self confidence tools you can learn. It will help you to communicate effectively with others and gain a healthier self esteem.
The best communication skills don't just involve speaking clearly. They include listening carefully to what someone says, being able to listen to their body language and tone of voice. Pay attention to your facial expression and tonality as well. Learning how to communicate effectively will improve your communication skills and give you a more confident, balanced and fulfilled life.
