From Surviving to Thriving: Tashieanna's Story of Trauma, Strength, and the Women Who Inspire Her

41m | Oct 27, 2026

On this personal and powerful episode of Childcare Challenges, Tashieanna O'Connor opens up like never before, sharing her own harrowing journey from childhood abuse in Jamaica to becoming the fierce advocate and childcare provider she is today. This episode is the first of a special two-part series, recorded as part of her honorary luncheon interview with She Leads Justice, and advocacy organisation that supports under-resourced and marginalised women in Connecticut.

Tashieanna begins by honoring the women who inspire her every day—the mothers in her daycare who face unimaginable challenges with grace and grit. But the heart of this episode is Tashieanna's own story.

For the first time, she goes in depth about the abuse she endured as a child—molested, beaten by family members, and told that no one would believe her. At just eleven years old, she handed her mother a knife and begged to be killed. She shares the pain of being separated from her mother, the cruelty she faced at the hands of her grandmother and uncle in America, and the moment she decided she would survive—not just for herself, but to one day rescue her mother and siblings back in Jamaica.

Tashieanna speaks candidly about the cycle of trauma, the broken systems that failed to protect her, and the moment she realized she wanted to be the voice for children that she never had. She also opens up about meeting her first son's father, the trauma bonding that led to her pregnancy, and the loss that would ultimately drive her to dedicate her life to protecting other people's children.

This episode is not a cry for pity. It is a declaration of survival. Tashieanna is not a victim—she is a survivor, an overcomer, and a testament to the power of resilience. Her story will break your heart, but it will also inspire you to believe that no matter how dark the past, there is always a way forward.
