After Fearing was freed, she learned to read and write, became a teacher, and bought her own home. In her fifties, Maria sold her house as a means to finance her missionary journey to the Congo, where she stayed for as long as she was able. After her father purchased freedom for himself and his family, Smith became deeply  involved in the Methodist church, and eventually served as a missionary in India, Africa, and Great Britain, among other places. Born into an active abolitionist family in Philadelphia, Grimké became a teacher, and was later asked to teach newly emancipated people on the Sea Islands in North Carolina. While teaching there, Grimké collected folklore and wrote about the customs on the island, and published essays about her time on the island. Stewart is also known for being the first woman in America to give a speech in front of a mixed audience of black and white men and women.
