Terry Kawaja, Founder and CEO at Luma Partners
Terry Kawaja is the founder of Luma Partners, the boutique investment banking firm he launched 16 years ago and built into the go-to name in ad tech and martech. A veteran M&A banker who started at Salomon Brothers, he has worked on landmark deals including AOL Time Warner, Invite Media's sale to Google, and Moat's sale to Oracle. He is also the creator of the Lumascape, the set of visual maps articulating our industry’s tech plumbing.
Terry joins the podcast to talk about betting his career on ad tech in 2005, his belief in "objective credibility," and why he'll trade short-term revenue for it. He explains why Luma works as a strategic matchmaker rather than an auctioneer, his belief that our industry's fragmentation has to end, and the reasons he believes that creative is the place where AI can make the biggest difference moving forward (it's got to do with the power of effectiveness over efficency).
Terry and Jordan also discuss the meeting at his old firm that helped push him toward starting Luma, the personal gambles he made to put his IP out into the marketplace, his showman side, and why giving his best ideas away for free is good business.
