  • Casey Mitchell

At 19 years old Casey Mitchell overdosed on her family's living room floor. Her sister saved her life.

Casey's sobriety date is 10/24/13 so this October she will celebrate her 8th anniversary.

Casey's best friend Jessica McKinley, who I previously interviewed in episode 7, stayed by Casey's side throughout her entire addiction. I have loved getting to know them and their friendship.

Casey considers herself an addict and alcoholic because heroin and alcohol were her drugs of choice, just depends on what time of her life.

Addiction runs in Casey's family, tune in to see what steps Casey takes to break the cycle!

  • Being A Reformed Felon with Jake Bishop

Jake Bishop is a native of the Rochester area and has had a long history of helping the community through volunteering and outreach programs. Campaigning for congressional and mayoral candidates sparked his passion for inspiring others and speaking publicly.

In 2015, Jake was arrested for trafficking and distributing 132pds of marijuana which led to an arrest for distribution/possession. After a period of incarceration, Jake has worked tirelessly to help the community and considers himself a reformed felon, as well as an advocate for recovery.

In 2019 he formed Rising Up Recovery to inform the public about the opioid crisis and help those suffering from addiction by providing awareness and being active in the community with the resources to help.

Jake discusses recovery and addiction with politicians, healthcare workers, former substance users, and community activists to inform the public/educate the public.

Jake lives happily in Brighton with his German Shepherd Ally and enjoys cooking, weightlifting at the JCC, and spending time with his lovely girlfriend Dawn and her two daughters.

His favorite quote “If you treat me good I will treat you better”

Using his personal experiences and blunt attitude, Jake hopes to prevent others from going down this same path.

Rising Up Recovery can be heard on Mondays from 1 to 2 pm.

  • 20 Years of Sobriety & More with Dan Springer

Dan has been in recovery for more than 20 years, he has been in six rehabs and countless detoxes. Today, after nearly dying 18 months ago, Dan is clean and sober. His story is like many others, however, the journey is quite different.

Dan is 55 years old and is married to a recovering addict and alcoholic who also suffers from mental health issues.

It is imperative that “we” as a country begin to change the long-standing stigma of addiction. Many (most) people think of homeless people or those who come from horrible beginnings as addicts. I have been an executive in numerous white-collar companies and now run a successful business.

Tune in to listen to Dan share his story but, more importantly, discuss his own journey and offer hope to those who are feeling hopeless and helpless.

As Dan likes to say, “The only time you look down on someone is when you are giving them a hand up (not a handout).”

  • Melissa Ott

Melissa's sobriety date is 11-14-2016. That isn’t where her journey begins nor ends.

Melissa was born into a successful family that is riddled with alcoholism. She was given many opportunities, almost all the things she needed and wanted minus a few key elements. Alcoholism got hold of her anyway. She believes it to be a genetic trait accompanied by a traumatic experience.

Since Melissa was young she felt different, alone, unloveable. She bounced from school to school. Four schools before I graduated. The changes were usually revolved around learning disability help or bullying.

Her addiction took her to places she never imagined she would be, doing things she never imagined doing. She was properly horrified at herself.

Tune in to see how far Melissa has come and where she is now!

Devin's sobriety date is Opioid Awareness Day, August 31st.

Devin is one of my closest friends, I consider him a brother, family.

Devin has lost two of his sisters, Starr and Skye, 11 years apart, both to addiction, and Devin himself has struggled with his own addiction. He has been to The Liberty Ranch, he was recently out here in LA participating in an inpatient program. We got to visit and it was a lot of fun!

Devin finds his peace in the gym and lifting really really heavy weights. Devin competes in classic physique bodybuilding. With two overall titles under his belt and 4 national qualifications! In his free time, he enjoys gaming!

"This prep is about surviving against all odds, and in that aspect, I've already won. On March 10th, 2020 I flatlined. Despite my best efforts, I survived. There were many months of very dark thoughts followed by even more substance abuse. In some of my weakest moments, the only thing that kept me going was the thought of stepping back on stage. Obviously, we all want to win and hold shiny swords, but more importantly, we all want to survive and be happy. As mentioned, my very first day sober consisted of reconnecting with my great friend and coach. From the very start, we had a plan for redemption."

  • The Opioid Crisis - Why I'm Doing This

Since 2000, more than 500,000 Americans have died of opioid overdoses

Millions of Americans have become addicted. The US government estimates that the cost of the opioid abuse is over $1 trillion

I guess you could say addiction runs in my family, my aunt was a heroin addict, I was addicted to pills.

In 2017 I started my journey towards sobriety. I did not take the "traditional path" as most do. Recovery is a different journey for everyone, do not compare yourself! Be patient and kind with yourself.

Baylee is as extroverted as it gets: ENFP (The Champion or Campaigner depending on where you look), Enneagram 3w2 (Achiever/Helper), high IS (Counselor), and I LOVE people a lot. Baylee is a dear friend from home!

Bayle has suffered from anxiety from as early as she can remember. The idea of going places alone makes her heart race, her entire body sweat, and her stomach nauseous. Seriously, she used to make friends go to doctors’ appointments and the grocery store with her.

Baylee lost her sister Lexi to addiction in 2016. Baylee has struggled with her own addictions as well. Tune in if you’re anything like Baylee (ahem, an extreme extrovert), the idea of being alone in an unknown place with zero plans for a week probably sounds like the worst plan ever. Yet that’s exactly what she did last summer and is currently doing right now. Why? Because it turned out to be the most unexpected antidote to anxiety and a doorway to breakthrough she could have ever imagined.
