  • Bonus: The Fall and Rise of the Buffalo - Travel South Dakota Stories Podcast

If you like Adventure Sports Podcast, then you'll love the Travel South Dakota Stories podcast. You can find their episodes anywhere you get podcasts. Today we're featuring The Fall and Rise of the Buffalo.

Feel the ground rumble and the dust fly as sixty cowboys and cowgirls saddle up to bring in a thundering herd of 1,300 buffalo at the 57th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. But we’re not just watching it, we are in the thick of it as we get thrown around on the back of a truck chasing the herd across the wide-open plains. Listen to one of the riders Molly as she cracks her whip and corals the galloping beasts.

We also meet Lakota rider and manager of Bear Butte State Park, Jim Jandreau, who tells us what the buffalo means to the Lakota people.

At the end of the long and tiring ride we join Molly’s 87-year-old dad, who had just taken part in his 53rd roundup.

Along the way we discover that although the roundup harks back to a different time, the adventurous spirit of South Dakotans that has been a way of life for centuries still lives on. And that spirit is infectious.

“You’re experiencing what you see on TV and the old western movies, the buffalo roaming across the prairie like that. It's that old west tradition that you don't see anywhere else in the world.” – Matt Snyder, Superintendent of Custer State Park

More info about the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup can be found at travelsouthdakota.com.

  • Ep. 968: Biking the Camino de Santiago - Maksim Tsvetovat

A few years ago Max was facing his 40th birthday, spending most of his time on the couch. His last athletic achievement was a 1-mile run in 6th grade and hadn’t ventured outdoors in decades.

Through a rather unremarkable, but consistent chain of events, he has found an athlete inside, and has become a competitive triathlete and adventurer.

Most recent adventure was originally planned as an epic gravel bike ride, a minimalist multi-day traverse of Spain along the route of Camino de Santiago, the historic pilgrimage that leads to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia

However, the spiritual nature of the Camino overtook the physical aspects, and changed the course of the whole ride, and perhaps Max's outlook on life, work, adventures and finding balance.

  • Ep. 956: Crossing Baffin Island on Skis - Valerie Gagne

In February, Valerie, Ray Zahab, and Kevin Valley crossed a section of Baffin Island in the Canadian arctic on skis. A 7-day expedition was made even more impressive since Ray was accomplishing this adventure after being diagnosed with cancer in September and going through chemo treatments.

Valérie has been an athlete all her life, competing in cross-country skiing and rowing internationally. Since retiring from high performance sports, Valérie has competed in various ultramarathons and has been on multiple expeditions to some of the most remote places on earth, including the Atacama desert and the Canadian Arctic. Valérie has also guided expeditions in the Canadian Rockies, Siberia and Death valley for various non-profits organizations, and for renowned adventure companies including National Geographic and Kapik1 expedition company.

Valerie's goal through crossing Baffin Island on skis was to inspire people to reach beyond their perceived limits, get out there and accomplish what they thought might be impossible.

Thirty years of crippling social anxiety will do that to a girl. Adventure became Paula’s personal therapy in 2012 and, ever since, she has terrified herself daily in the name of recovery. Shelby Stanger is passionate about how we can use the power of adventure to improve our mental wellbeing and live without compromise. The journalist-turned-podcaster’s work has appeared everywhere from Outside Magazine and CNN to ESPN and The San Diego Union Tribune.

In 2016, Shelby started the Wild Ideas Worth Living Podcast to dive deeper into stories of how adventure and nature changes us. The podcast is now owned by REI Co-op Studios, and Shelby, who has interviewed hundreds of adventurers, remains the host and creator of the show.

    Originally aired October 14, 2019

Growing up in Florida, Nick had fallen in love with water and the ocean lifestyle. However, it wasn’t until studying geography at Florida State University that he discovered just how beautiful other oceans, beaches, and islands around the world really were. He quickly set his eyes on the South Pacific and ultimately Australia. His adventures are vast, his stories are epic, and his stoke for life is contagious.

He sets his compass in the direction of the unknown because he now knows that’s the best way to better your world and open up the opportunities in front of you. Nick is a strong believer that you can do anything you want as long as you overcome the largest barrier in your way...yourself.

  • Ep. 952: Leaving Your Successful Outdoor Company - Davis Smith

Davis is the founder and CEO of Cotopaxi, an outdoor gear brand with a humanitarian mission of creating “gear for good”. Davis is also an adventurer who has floated down the Amazon on a self-made raft, kayaked from Cuba to Florida, and explored North Korea. Davis grew up in Latin America and currently lives in Utah with his wife and four children.

Here’s why we’re talking to him on AS though, he’s leaving his role as CEO for a 3-year mission in Brazil. Davis and his family have answered the call to move to Brazil this summer to serve as missionaries.

We often hear of folks leaving their corporate jobs, or school to start a career in the outdoors, or how they took the path less taken and never looked back. But what about those who start that company, and then have an unexpected detour once things are going well? It’ll be exciting to follow up with Davis in the coming years.
