The Burger Chef Murders
32m | Oct 23, 2026On the night of November 17, 1978, four young employees arrived for what should have been an ordinary Friday shift at a Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana.
By morning, they had vanished.
At first, police believed the missing workers had stolen money from the restaurant and fled. But hours later, the bodies of 20-year-old Daniel Davis, 17-year-old Jayne Friedt, 16-year-old Ruth Shelton, and 16-year-old Mark Flemmonds were discovered in a wooded area miles away.
What followed was one of the most frustrating investigations in American true crime history. A crime scene was contaminated. Critical evidence was lost. Witness accounts conflicted. Suspects emerged and disappeared. Decades passed without arrests.
More than 45 years later, the Burger Chef murders remain officially unsolved.
In this episode, we examine the lives of the four victims, the events of that night, the investigation that followed, the mistakes that haunted the case, and the theories that continue to surround one of Indiana's most infamous unsolved murders.
Because sometimes the greatest mystery isn't who committed the crime—it's whether the truth was missed when investigators had their best chance to find it.
