Steve Tulloch has lived through reggae's journey from physical records to global digital streaming. Now he's asking an important question: how much of that new music economy do artists actually control?

On this episode of Reggae Hour, we sit down with Kingston 13's Steve Tulloch for a conversation connecting reggae's foundation to the challenges facing artists today.

Tulloch takes us back to his early development, including the stepmother who encouraged his natural gift and his formative experiences at Studio One. Those sessions gave the young singer more than recording experience—they gave him a sense that he belonged in music.

From there, the conversation moves into the present.

Steve discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the digital era, including streaming's extraordinary global reach but the economic challenges it can create for working artists. His proposed direction for emerging musicians is straightforward: build something you control. He pairs that message with three principles for longevity—discipline, consistency and confidence.

We also explore reggae's larger responsibility in a world facing war, inequality and economic hardship. Steve describes reggae as a voice for “the oppressed… the depressed… [and] the downtrodden” and explains why he still turns to the music himself when he needs strength.

The conversation looks forward, too. Steve reveals that he's developing a 16-track album, with approximately nine tracks completed at the time of the interview. The project, he says, will stay rooted in reality while making room for lovers rock—and when asked which songs are hits, his answer is simple: all of them.

Finally, we ask Steve what he wants people to remember when they look back on his life and music years from now.
