Wise Scientists 7: Satish Kumar
39m | Mar 9, 2026Philosopher-physicist Ravi Ravindra notes that according to all the sages, there are many levels of reality subtler than the mind. So, any enterprise wholly driven by the mind—including science, philosophy, and theology—cannot connect with these subtler levels of reality. In order to relate with these subtle levels one needs to rely on direct perception, not on thought.
Hence, the need to open up and enhance the quality of perception and being among scientists. Then they are more likely to attain knowledge which is closer to wisdom. A wise scientist is interested in truth - which is a subtle combination of knowledge and compassion.
In this Wise Scientists podcast series, Ravi engages in dialogue with leading scientists about the need for more wisdom in society in general, and specifically among scientists due to its cultural power and influence as well as the speed of current technological developments, for instance in AI.
In this episode he talks with renowned Indian-British activist, author, and speaker Satish Kumar. Satish is a known for his lifelong commitment to peace, ecology, and social justice. He became a Jain monk at the age of nine. At eighteen, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's teachings on non-violence and land reform, he left the monastic life to join Vinoba Bhave's movement advocating for social change in India. In 1962 he undertook an extraordinary peace pilgrimage of over 8,000 miles on foot to the capitals of the world's nuclear powers—Moscow, Paris, London, and Washington, D.C., delivering "peace tea" packets to the leaders of these nations, emphasizing the need for dialogue and understanding rather than conflict.
In addition to his activism, Kumar has been a significant figure in ecological education. He served as the editor of *Resurgence & Ecologist* magazine for over four decades and co-founded Schumacher College in Devon, England, which focuses on holistic education and sustainability. His work emphasizes "reverential ecology," advocating for a deep respect for nature and the interconnectedness of all life.
