A Mother's Promise: The Loss That Turned Me Into an Advocate
36m | Nov 3, 2026On this conclusion to her interview with She Leads Justice, Tashieanna O'Connor picks up where she left off—and takes listeners on an emotional journey through the darkest chapter of her life.
Tashieanna shares the devastating story of her first son. At just nineteen years old, she found herself trapped in an abusive relationship, isolated from her family, and fighting a legal system that refused to see her as anything but "crazy." When she attempted suicide, she made the impossible choice to leave her baby with his grandmother, believing he would be safe. The courts agreed, granting custody to a family with money, status, and power—while dismissing her pleas that her son was in danger.
Six months later, her son was dead. The judge's response when she walked into the courtroom, sobbing and broken, was three words: "I'm sorry for your loss." Then she retired.
This episode is about the moment Tashieanna made a vow that would define the rest of her life. Standing in the cemetery, watching her son's small white casket be lowered into the ground, she promised him—and herself—that she would never let another child go through what he did. She would be the voice for those who had no voice. She would advocate for the mothers, the children, and the families that the system refused to listen to.
