Marybeth Tinning - Nine Children Died. She Was Only Convicted for One.

5m | Oct 15, 2026

Between 1972 and 1985, nine children in the Tinning family of Schenectady, New York, died. The first was a daughter, Jennifer, who died of bacterial meningitis at eight days old — a genuine medical tragedy. Then a son. Then another son. Then a daughter. One by one, over thirteen years, the children stopped breathing. Doctors documented each death. They looked at genetics. They considered SIDS. They kept finding explanations.

Then the eighth child to die was adopted. Not biologically related to either parent. The genetic coincidence theory stopped making sense.

The ninth death, four-month-old Tami Lynne, finally triggered the investigation that should have come years earlier. Marybeth Tinning confessed to smothering three of her children during a police interview — then retracted it. She was charged with only one murder: Tami Lynne’s. The other eight deaths produced no charges. She was convicted in 1987 and spent the next three decades applying for parole. She was released in 2018 after her eighth hearing. The unanswered questions — how many, and why — went with her. This episode covers all nine deaths, the missed opportunities, the confession, the trial, and the psychology behind one of the most quietly devastating cases in American criminal history.
