Diane Downs Shot Her Kids and Blamed a Stranger
5m | Oct 14, 2026At 10:48pm on May 19, 1983, Diane Downs pulled into the emergency bay at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, Oregon. Her three children were in the car. Cheryl, aged seven, was already dead. Danny, eight, and Christie, nine, were in critical condition. Downs herself had a gunshot wound to her arm.
Her story: a shaggy-haired stranger had flagged her down on a rural road, demanded her car keys, and when she refused, opened fire into the back seat. Investigators began noticing problems almost immediately. Her affect was wrong. Her story shifted. The ballistic evidence didn’t match. Then Christie, recovering from a stroke caused by her injuries, began to communicate with investigators. The answer she gave to the question of who pulled the trigger ended the case.
Downs’s own diaries became prosecution evidence. They revealed a woman obsessed with a married man who didn’t want her children complicating his life. She was convicted of murder and two counts of attempted murder in 1984. Three years into her sentence, she escaped from prison. She was recaptured eleven days later. This episode covers the crime, the investigation, Christie’s testimony, the trial, the escape, and the psychology of a woman who chose herself over everything else.
