• Kathy Guisti | Navigating Cancer in a Broken Healthcare System

Over 25 years ago at age 37, Kathy was given the news that she had 3 years to live due to a diagnosis of a rare blood cancer. But Kathy, a self-described “impatient patient,” turned her death-sentence into a decades-long crusade. Not only did she save her own life; she’s gone on to disrupt and galvanize our deeply broken healthcare system and transform care for millions. • Dean Hall | Healing Two Cancers with Nature’s Bounty

Dean has been a licensed clinical therapist and coach for over 30 years. Astonishingly, in that time he has conducted over fifty thousand face-to-face, one-hour sessions.

Besides being a best-selling author, and highly sought-after speaker, Dean is also a two-time cancer survivor, widower and two-time world record-setting extreme distance swimmer. He is the first person to swim the entire 187-mile length of Oregon’s longest river, the Willamette River, (which he did as an active cancer patient) in 2014, and Ireland’s longest river, the River Shannon (180 miles), in 2017.

This much time spent immersed in the flow of mighty rivers has changed Dean’s life in many dynamic and miraculous ways. His Willamette River swim threw Dean into radical remission unexpectedly healing his leukemia without chemo or radiation while easing his trauma and grief from losing his wife fifteen days before their thirtieth anniversary. Buoyed by his firsthand experience of the healing power of nature when his lymphoma worsened and doctors once again pushed him to do chemo and radiation Dean chose to try Forest Bathing first. Dr. Qing Li’s research on the proven efficacy of time spent in forests and how it boosted NK (Natural Killer) cells and the immune system by over two-hundred and fifty times for a period of two weeks gave Dean the courage to decide instead for a weekly regimen of forest bathing instead. In May of 2015, he started spending all day once a week forest bathing deep in the Mt. Hood Wilderness and by March of 2016 he was declared cancer free.

These gifts of natural healing pushed Dean to make it his organization, The Wild Cure Way, whose mission is to encourage the world to get out of concrete jungles, manmade boxes and away from digital devices and dive into wild waterways and venture into deep forests as a form of authentic deep healing and, oddly enough, environmental protection. He believes it’s impossible to swim in wild waters or amble through ancient forests without falling in love with them and like Jacque Cousteau used to say, “You protect what you love.”.

During our conversation, Dean shares what he feels led to his leukemia diagnosis, why he chose not to do chemo and radiation the first time, what he chose to do instead, the interesting answer he got when he asked “the leukemia” why it was present in his life, how a year and a half after his wife's passing he was diagnosed with a secondary cancer, and the turning point that led him out of despair and into true healing.

  • Dr. Paul Marik | Repurposed Drugs and Metabolic Interventions for Treating Cancer

Dr. Marik has had an immeasurable impact on the practice of medicine and the aspiring physicians he has educated throughout his over 30 years as a critical care doctor and professor of medicine.

He is a pioneer in the practice of critical care medicine and is responsible for developing several treatment protocols that have been used around the world to save the lives of countless people, most notably his revolutionary work in developing the standard of care for the treatment for sepsis, and for his outstanding contributions to the successful protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, medical professionals were looking for answers, trying to find ways to treat the growing number of patients that were suffering and dying with virtually no treatment options available. As a lifelong advocate for the advancement of science and independent thought and guided by his strong belief in collaborating with peers, Dr. Marik began exchanging information with his colleagues around the world on several approaches that were showing promise using known medications that were readily available to safely treat COVID patients with success. It was from those exchanges and collective learning that the FLCCC was born.

In a short time, the FLCCC grew to become an organization led by some of the world’s leading physicians, scientists, and scholars. While many in medicine were still waiting for guidance from the government and medical authorities, the FLCCC was providing lifesaving treatment protocols for the world to use in fighting an enemy that seemed invincible. Because of the work of Dr. Marik and the FLCCC we know that COVID-19 is a highly preventable and treatable illness.

Dr. Marik began his career in medicine in 1989 when he was an attending physician and assistant professor and Associate Director, ICU in the Department of Intensive Care at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa. In 1992 Dr. Marik began his career in the United States as an assistant professor at Wayne State University Department of Internal Medicine and as the Associate Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Detroit Receiving Hospital. After several appointments at medical schools in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, Dr. Marik settled at East Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in 2009.

Throughout his career Dr. Marik has been dedicated to medical research, publishing over 460 papers in peer-reviewed journals worldwide. In 2004 Dr. Marik was ranked 18th Leading Critical Care Investigator, as measured by number of publications between 1997 and August 2003. Today Dr. Marik remains the second most published critical care physician in the world.

Earlier this year Dr. Marik left his position at EVMS to dedicate more time to the FLCCC and fighting for the independence of all medical professionals to have the freedom to do their jobs

without unwarranted interference from authorities and fear and intimidation driven by commercial interests.

His latest work is an extensive review of the evidence on the use of repurposed medications in treating cancer. Using the findings of over 800 peer-reviewed studies, Dr. Marik and his team developed a monograph that is intended to educate physicians and their patients about the often-overlooked role repurposed medications, supplements and lifestyle habits have in cancer treatment protocols.

During our conversation Dr. Marik shares how his cancer care monograph empowers patients to take control of their treatment plan, his recommendations for preventing and treating cancer, the important role Vitamin D plays in immune strength, an important myth about the cause of melanoma, and which cancers are more responsive to chemotherapy and which ones are not.

  • Elizabeth Benedict | Rewriting Illness

With wisdom, self-effacing wit and the story-telling artistry of an acclaimed novelist, Elizabeth Benedict recollects her cancer diagnosis after discovering multiplying lumps in her armpit. In compact, explosive chapters, interspersed with moments of self-mocking levity, she chronicles her illness from muddled diagnosis to “natural remedies,” to debilitating treatments, as she gathers sustenance from family, an assortment of urbane friends, and a fearless “cancer guru.”

Amidst weighty concerns of the Covid pandemic and an all-consuming obsession over her ailments, Rewriting Illness is suffused with suspense, secrets, and the unexpected solace of silence.

During our conversation, Elizabeth shares why she was reluctant to write about her illness, why she feels doctors delayed giving her appropriate tests when she felt a lump under her arm, what she’s doing differently post cancer, how her lifelong fear of flying subsided after treatment, and how COVID helped her fit in with everyone else.
