Concept Care Podcast: Workforce Wellbeing, Support Worker Safety & Burnout Prevention
11m | Sep 25, 2026Support work is meaningful, skilled and deeply human — but it can also be physically demanding, emotionally complex and unpredictable. In this episode of the Concept Care Podcast, we explore practical ways disability support workers can prioritise safety, wellbeing and burnout prevention while continuing to provide high-quality, person-centred support.
We discuss why worker safety needs to be considered before, during and after every shift, including understanding participant support plans, risk assessments, behaviour support strategies, mobility requirements and emergency procedures. We also look at the importance of having the right information, equipment, training and staffing arrangements before completing tasks.
The episode covers common physical and psychological workplace risks, including fatigue, working alone, occupational violence, aggression and harassment, inadequate information, challenging incidents, emotional strain and tasks that fall outside a worker’s training or competence.
You’ll also learn how to recognise early signs of fatigue and burnout, such as difficulty concentrating, irritability, unusual mistakes, disrupted sleep, feeling overwhelmed and struggling to recover between shifts. We discuss practical steps that may help, including speaking with a supervisor, reviewing rosters and duties, increasing supervision, accessing training, debriefing and using available wellbeing support.
Professional boundaries are another important part of safe support work. We explore maintaining appropriate communication, privacy and confidentiality, avoiding inappropriate personal contact, following workplace requirements around gifts and money, and speaking up when behaviour is threatening, discriminatory or unsafe.
The episode also explains what to do following serious incidents, aggression or distress, including incident reporting, escalation and appropriate debriefing. Most importantly, we discuss why workplace safety should not depend solely on individual resilience. Safe and sustainable support requires clear communication, suitable staffing, realistic rostering, appropriate training, maintained equipment, effective supervision and a workplace culture where workers can raise concerns without fear of blame.
Whether you’re an experienced disability support worker, new to the sector or considering a career in disability support, this episode provides practical guidance to help you recognise risks, protect your wellbeing and contribute to safer, more consistent support.
