Meanwhile, core CPI—which excludes volatile food and energy costs—increased 0.3% over the prior month and rose 2.4% year-over-year, coming in largely in line with expectations as energy cost increases drove broader price gains.

U.S. stock futures were lower on Wednesday, as the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped following Tuesday’s lower close.

Brent crude surged toward $100 per barrel following military exchanges in the Middle East. Escalating supply disruption fears intensified after CENTCOM destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in response to attacks on U.S. naval vessels and Houthi strikes targeted Saudi energy facilities.

U.S. stock futures declined on Tuesday, as the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices fell, following Friday’s lower close.

Small business sentiment cooled in August as the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index fell 1.1 points to 98.7, pulling back from July’s high but remaining slightly above its 52-year average of 98.0. The drop was largely driven by deteriorating expectations for general business conditions and a net negative 9% of owners reporting lower nominal sales over the past quarter.

Brent crude futures climbed above $99 per barrel as U.S. markets reopened following the Labor Day holiday, driven by national gas prices hitting a record holiday high of $4.15 a gallon on Monday. Addressing the surge, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that oil prices “will drop precipitously” once the conflict with Iran ends, predicting prices will fall to “Three Dollars a gallon, but ultimately, below Two Dollars a gallon.”

This week, investors will look out for the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report due on Friday and Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) highly anticipated product release event on Wednesday, which is expected to feature new iPhone 18 models.

Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.81%, and the two-year bond was at 4.38%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing in a 60.4% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking interest rates at its September meeting.

  • Dow Jones, S&P 500 Futures Rise, Nasdaq 100 Falls as US-Iran Tensions Escalate— DELL, PANW, MDB, AVGO in Focus

U.S. stock futures declined on Wednesday, as the Dow Jones, S&P 500 indices rose and Nasdaq 100 index fell, following Tuesday's lower close.

U.S. private payrolls increased by just 38,000 jobs in August, marking the slowest pace of job creation since January as job losses in manufacturing, professional services, and information weighed on growth.

Energy markets surged following an exchange of U.S. airstrikes and Iranian counterattacks in the Middle East, pushing Brent crude up 0.55% to $95.17 a barrel. Threatening global oil supplies, Tehran retaliated against U.S. bases after military strikes targeted Iranian capabilities in response to shipping attacks.

Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.81%, and the two-year bond was at 4.4%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing in a 68.1% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking interest rates at its September meeting.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE: SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were higher in premarket on Wednesday. The SPY was up 0.14% at $762.86, while the QQQ advanced by 0.031% to $707.86.

Rising Middle East tensions pushed Brent crude futures up 4.46% to $92.31 a barrel after President Donald Trump threatened further strikes against Iran while ruling out nuclear action against an opponent he described as "totally defeated."

Meanwhile, tech infrastructure took center stage as Trump warned that communities rejecting AI data centers risk being "backwards and poor."

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(NYSE: SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF(NASDAQ: QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were lower in premarket on Tuesday. The SPY was down 0.57% at $762.67, while the QQQ declined by 1.16% to $708.43.

  • S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, Dow Jones Futures Fall as US-Iran Tensions Flare Up—WMT, RZLV, FNGR in Focus

U.S. stock futures were lower on Monday, as the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices fell, following Friday’s lower close.

Geopolitical and trade anxieties spiked over the weekend following U.S. military strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz, which triggered Iranian missile and drone retaliation against U.S. air bases in Jordan on Sunday. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump intensified trade tensions by calling Canada "the worst" for trade abuses and asserting his tariffs have "saved" the U.S. auto industry.

The market will turn toward key economic indicators this week, highlighted by Friday’s crucial August employment data. Investors will also be tracking a busy earnings lineup this week, featuring top AI infrastructure providers such as Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:DELL), Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (NYSE:HPE), and Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO), along with cybersecurity leader Palo Alto Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:PANW).

On Friday, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh used his first Jackson Hole address to warn investors that the fight against inflation remains far from finished. He delivered a hawkish message: inflation remains too high, the labor market is effectively at full employment, and financial conditions may not be restraining the economy much at all.

The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.71%, and the two-year bond was at 4.31%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing a 61.9% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking the current interest rates during its September meeting.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(NYSE: SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were lower in premarket on Monday. The SPY was down 0.23% at $767.56, while the QQQ declined by 0.17% to $715.19.

  • S&P 500, Dow Futures Rise, Nasdaq 100 Slips Ahead of Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole Speech — MRVL, PYPL, IREN, GAP in Focus

U.S. stock futures were mixed on Friday, as the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indices advanced while the Nasdaq 100 index fell, following Thursday's higher close.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent intensified his “economic D-Day” pressure campaign, accusing Iran’s “corrupt regime” of funding overseas terror while domestic economic conditions deteriorate. Driven by the expanding financial offensive, the Iranian rial collapsed to a record low of approximately 1.37 million per dollar as August oil loadings plummeted to 248,000 barrels daily.

Investors will keep an eye on Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh as he addresses an audience of international economists and central bankers at Jackson Hole. Global markets will closely monitor his remarks for further details regarding the economy, recent bond market volatility, and emerging risks to the U.S. and global outlooks.

Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.67%, and the two-year bond was at 4.23%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing a 33.7% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking the current interest rates during its September meeting.
