Every Album Track Doesn’t Need To Be A Trendy Hit

Popholics, we need to have a little MUSIC meeting. This week, it’s all about algorithm vs art & the fact that not all music has to be made for virality!
On this episode of The Weekly Wind Down, Jer is asking a question that might get a few of y’all hot under the collar: have we confused immediacy with quality? In an era where the hook needs to hit immediately, the lyric needs to be quotable, and every song apparently needs a 15 second moment made for TikTok, are we still listening to albums as ART… or are we listening for content?
The conversation starts with Victoria Monét and the reactions to her latest album, but quickly opens into a much bigger discussion about how the TikTok economy has influenced songwriting, production, music discovery, and even the way we judge an artist’s body of work.
Jer gets into the rise of shorter songs, hook first songwriting, the difference between knowing a song and actually knowing the SONG, and why audiences can sometimes dismiss an entire album because it does not immediately hand them a viral moment.
And honey, NOT EVERY TRACK IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HIT. Sometimes the weird song is the point. Sometimes track seven is where you finally understand the artist. Sometimes an album needs a slow burner, an interlude, a left turn, a song that makes absolutely no sense to TikTok but makes perfect sense to the person who created it.
Jer also gets into the forgotten art of the album deep cut, old school album sequencing, artist experimentation, A&R, and why giving artists the freedom to create without making every decision around immediate performance could be exactly what pop and R&B need right now.
Plus, Jer is coming out the gate with some announcements, including iHeartRadio Top Host voting, FLO’s new tour, Slayyyter’s upcoming album, Tinashe charting, The A Different World reboot, and more Popholic roll call than you can shake a tambourine at.
So settle in, beloved. Because maybe the problem is not that music has gotten boring. Maybe we just forgot how to listen.
