Episode 219 - Helen Haines

1h 46m | Oct 27, 2026

We aren't doing the usual episode format this time and stripping it down to bare bones a bit. It took a little while for this one to come together - it's just been a bit of a shit week to be honest.

Once again this nation is seeing a tragedy strike that threatens our democracy in a fundamental way. And how do we deal with this? Once upon a time this would bring us together. We would console each other, seek answers and justice and generally handle it like mature, reasonable people.

Nah. Let's blame Albo. Or the Greens. It's that Shoebridge bloke he followed him! Or maybe it's all a conspiracy - Albo planned it!

What?

Helen Haines is an excellent person all round. Hard to fault her. We look at her background, her electorate and celebrate her decency.

Of course we have to look at the alleged perpetrator and look at the trail of breadcrumbs he left behind.

The thing we are not going to do is say that we know what he was thinking, why he did it - or blame some kind of random external factor that has absolutely nothing to do with it. We just don't know.

We recorded this on Sunday but it needed a bit of an edit. I think we both just found this a bit jarring to cover.

After the horrific handling of the Bondi tragedy you would think we are better than this. Apparently not.
