So here’s the great challenge of life: You can have more than you’ve got because you can become more than you are. That is the great focus of attention for life change.

When you stay focused on your purpose, not your problem, you can be happy even when life seems to be falling apart.

• What do you believe is your purpose in life?
• How does your response to a difficult situation change when you realize that how you respond is your choice?
• What distractions or influences are keeping you focused on your problem and not your purpose?

There are certain moments in our lives that give us pause. They stop us in our tracks and challenge us to reflect on our priorities, our relationships and our purpose.

These moments come when we face a difficult diagnosis, a significant milestone or an unexpected change in life circumstances. We face these moments in the death of a friend, family member or public figure, especially when the loss is tragic and untimely.

When we pause, we take time to process with others, to share stories, to pray and to examine our own lives. Life slows down. But what comes after the pause? How does the event or experience inform us and impact our future?

Some people recognise nothing in their lives that fills it with such value, while others find that this kind of meaning just isn’t enough. They feel what contemporary philosopher John Cottingham calls a “need for transcendence”, a connection with something beyond the “immanent” material world that only religion can provide.

Meaninglessness is a constant threat for everyone, philosopher or not.
