But there are a few key things you should do before making the switch to ensure a smooth transition.

First, you should probably be familiar with the term “redirect” so you know what’s happening with your podcast. A “redirect”, sometimes also referred to as a “301 redirect”, is the process in which you migrate your podcast from one hosting platform to another. You can think of a redirect as similar to moving to a new home address. You bring everything with you, but the address changes!

The RSS Feed URL is the home address of your podcast. This Feed is what gives the various podcasting apps information on your show including title, description, and other metadata. It also provides these apps with all the audio files for your show.

Redirects are typically an instantaneous process, so it’s really important to make sure that your podcast is ready to be redirected before starting. This article will tell you everything you need to know about preparing for a redirect!

(Not So) Surprising!

The best way to ensure a successful redirect is to prep your hosting platforms. Reach out to your current hosting platform to let them know that you’re planning to move your show. This isn’t done to benefit the hosting platform but rather gives them an opportunity to share important details concerning redirects with you.

For example, some hosting platforms may require you to notify them 48 hours before your planned move. Some may need you to go through a special process in order to safely move your show to the new hosting platform. And others may need to “unlock” your show so it can actually be imported to your new hosting platform.

It’s understandable that you may want to keep your moving plans under wraps until the moment of your departure, but doing so tends to only harm you in the long run due to these unforeseen steps. Do yourself a favor and chat with your hosting platform’s Support team to make sure you’ve got everything you need to safely migrate.

Leave the Baking to Pastry Professionals

An immensely important step when migrating to a new hosting platform is to remove any dynamically inserted audio before you import your show. Neglecting to remove any dynamic audio can cause you to accidentally “bake-in” that audio to your show.

“Baking-in” audio means that you’re permanently adding the dynamically inserted audio into your raw episode files when importing. This can be a massive headache for you and your hosting platform as you’ll need to go through the import and redirect process all over again to ensure a ‘clean’ Feed is imported.

Save yourself some time and pain by removing any dynamic audio before you import your show to your new platform!

Back It Up

A mantra that should be repeated for all of your digital records, back up your files! This includes your episode audio files, your descriptions, transcripts, etc., and even your show analytics.

Though most hosting platforms are pretty aligned on what counts as a download, you likely won’t have a way to transfer your show’s analytics between hosts. This is why it’s recommended to save your analytics from your previous host. Some places, like RedCircle, allow you to download records of your analytics but a screenshot is also a great way to preserve those numbers.

From our experience, we do find advertisers are less interested in historical data and prefer recent download information instead. So, if you’re worried about losing ad opportunities, don’t fret! Most hosting platforms (us included!) are happy to mark you as eligible for ads if you’re able to provide historical data.

No Secrets Between Friends

Finally, one last important, though not necessarily required, step is to let your listeners know that you’re shifting some stuff on the backend. This helps to set expectations with your listeners on the off-chance that an issue occurs during your migration. Proactively setting these expectations with your audience can help to prevent confusion and upset feelings should your migration not be as smooth as you initially anticipated.

You don’t need to get into the technical details of redirecting. A simple notice that your podcast may be delayed in the coming days should suffice! You can share this update through with a special announcement episode, post it on your socials, or send it out in your newsletter. Or in whatever way you choose to speak with your audience.

There’s always a bit of nuance with technology, so we hope that this guide has been helpful in preparing you to migrate your podcast to a new platform.

Interested in redirecting to RedCircle? Learn why we might be the right choice for you.

Moving your podcast to a new hosting platform can be exciting!
